Wreaths across America
Detroit Lakes has been selected as a Wreaths across America (WAA) site to REMEMBER the fallen, HONOR those that serve and their families, and TEACH the next generation about the value of freedom. This marks the fourth year that Detroit Lakes, one of only a handful of Minnesota communities, will join millions of Americans in local community events and national cemeteries in all 50 states as part of National Wreaths Across America Day planned for Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018.
Wreaths Across America (WAA), a nonprofit organization best known for its annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery chose Detroit Lakes as one of one of over 1400 locations across the Nation that will participate in this tribune. Each year Tom and Pam Mortenson of Detroit Lakes lead the growing community effort to coordinate volunteers in placing wreaths at Veteran’s Memorial Park, Grand Army of the Republic Park, and Oak Grove Cemetery.
“We understand we have Veterans Day in the fall and Memorial Day in the spring, but our service members sacrifice their time and safety every single day of the year to preserve our freedoms”, Tom Mortenson said. According to Mortenson, “In many homes, there is an empty seat for one who is serving or one who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. There is no better time to express our appreciation than during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and take time to reflect on their sacrifice.
“We hope veterans and everyday citizens will join us to show our veterans and their families that we will not forget no matter what the weather. We will never forget,” Pam Mortenson of the Women’s Relief Corps said.
