Description
Come to hear Phletus and Sally Williams, retired residents of Pelican Rapids, Talk about the "Pelican Skeleton", one of the oldest discovered set of human remains ever unearthed in North America. She was unearthed in 1931 during the construction of Highway 59 and her estimated age is anywhere from 6,000-17.000 years. This girl was approximately 15 years of age at the time of her death, caught in the silt with a raised dagger. For years her resting place was the Ottertail County Historical Society, but with NAGPRA ( Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act) she has been returned to what are believed to be her ancestral people in Sisseton, South Dakota. The Williams will discuss the archeological digs that have taken place at the site, the desire to create new exhibits and an exploratory committee to help construct them in Pelican Rapids and educate the youth of the community about this unique piece of history.
