Description
National Trails Day: Hike the North Country Trail in Itasca State Park
June 6, 2015 is American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day, the country’s largest celebration of trails and their use. Established to highlight the importance of the national trails system and to encourage increased trail use and volunteer stewardship, it will be celebrated locally in Itasca State Park. Volunteers of the Laurentian Lakes and Itasca Moraine Chapters of the North Country Trail Association will serve as guides on a 6.5 mile hike on the North Country National Scenic Trail in the park.
The North Country National Scenic Trail is the longest national trail at 4,600 miles, followed by the Pacific Crest Trail at 2,654 miles and the Appalachian Trail at 2, 186 miles. The North Country trail passes through the States of North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. Local segments of the trail are supported by volunteers from the Laurentian Lakes and Itasca Moraine Chapters of the North Country Trail Association. Volunteers not only build and maintain trials, but plan hiking events to encourage use of the trails.
The guided hike to celebrate National Trails Day begins at 1 p.m. at the South Entrance of Itasca State Park. Bring water, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent. Entrance to the park is 21 miles north of park Rapids on U.S. Highway 71. From Bemidji the park is 30 miles south on U.S. Hwy 71.
The hike will continue with a program at 5:30 p.m. and catered cookout at 6:30 p.m. Please RSVP for the meal at llc@northcountrytrail.org or by contacting Karen Stenberg at 218-847-1929. The meal is $10.00 and the program includes a presentation of “Canal Boats and Castles: hiking in Bavaria”
This is the 12th hike of 25 for those partaking in the “Hiker’s Challenge 165,” a series of hikes covering a total of 125 miles from Detroit Lakes to beyond Remer, Mn. For more information about this hike or any of the hikes, contact Karen Stenberg.
