Description
For the fourth year, Detroit Lakes will join nearly 1,500 locations nation-wide as part of the Wreaths Across America (WAA) activities. Best known for placing thousands of wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery and other National Cemeteries, Wreaths Across America (WAA), a nonprofit organization best chose Detroit Lakes as a location that will participate in this tribune to REMEMBER the fallen, HONOR those that serve and their families, and TEACH the next generation about the value of freedom. Detroit Lakes is one of only a handful of Minnesota communities that participate in this event. Wreaths Across America (WAA), is a nonprofit organization that coordinates wreath ceremonies across the United States, at sea and abroad. Local Wreaths Across America ceremonies will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018 beginning at 10 AM, starting at Veteran’s Memorial Park, followed by the Grand Army of the Republic Park (1030 AM) , and Oak Grove Cemetery (11 AM). This year, an additional wreath ceremony will be held at the White Earth Indian Health Service Clinic at 1 PM. Local coordinators, Tom and Pam Mortenson of Detroit Lakes, lead the growing community effort to coordinate Veteran groups and volunteers in placing wreaths. Pam Mortenson of the Women’s Relief Corps, one of the groups supporting the event, stated that “the ceremonies are open to the public, family-friendly, and designed to focus on our Veterans and service members who sacrifice their time and safety every single day of the year to preserve our freedoms at a time when most of us are planning for the holidays.” According to Co-chair, Tom Mortenson, “This is an excellent time to express our appreciation than even during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season those of us in Detroit Lakes and White Earth take time to reflect on their sacrifice and show our support for them and their families “ For more information contact Tom or Pam Mortenson at internetmort@yahoo.com or about WAA or to sponsor a wreath please visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org
